relfection conclusion

conclusion

How have I changed ?

reflecting back on my year I can see I have grown as a person, although I am not the most confident person I definitely have started to gain my confidence. Another factors which conveys to me as a person is that im finally starting to find my feet although ideas and ambitions may change as soon as I find a field which I am good at or enjoy I now drive my development . Giving feedback or an opinion putting forward my ideas or asking for feedback or advice was something which I was always afraid to do, this was just in case it was incorrect , now asking for feedback or advise I have noticed helps you to learn from your mistakes as a person and also helps you to grow, which is the same as putting your ideas forward or giving your own feedback .

looking ahead...

As I have noticed from the past year at university I have definitely changed as a person and will continue to do so, however from experience , responses and skills over the past year and the summer , I have decided the three key words I will look ahead with in the future are: motivation; opportunity and development this will therefore help me to grow as a person and find out what kind of career path I would like to go down whether its Television and film or even beauty editorials and magazines.

supporting my studies ...

Over the next year there are certain changes which I will need to make in order to support my studies here are just a few factors which I feel I could put in place to make a difference to my studies:

- seeking the opportunity to use the studios after lessons- the studios are open after lesson this is valuable time which will help me to develop ideas as well as practice my skills and even atch up on any work.

- the library - taking out books from the key reading list on the portal will help me to develop my understanding of the topic . providing my blog with much more in depth information.

-the use of magazines - magazines provide plenty of information within different felids, they can also be used for visual content I feel this is something which will support my studies in terms of brainstorms moodboards and  references .

- exhibitions, museums and visiting specific areas related to the topic I feel this is something which I can use as a reference on my blog in order to convey and support my ideas and information provided.

- social media - social media is something which continues to grow by keeping updated by instagram and following other artists within the fields this is something I feel which can support and influence me with my own ideas. The facebook group also provides us with key information about the topics we are researching and also job related opportunities.

areas I need to work on when supporting  my studies...

I feel areas which I need to work on in order to support my studies is development, develop my ideas by uses other than the obvious resources given to me such as magazines and reading, the library portal is also a useful resource I feel I could use more, It includes valuble information from podcasts  and articles which can be used as references to support ideas.

Another area I need to work on to support my study is opportunity, there are many opportunities' which  are available through the year and will also give me experience in the industry  by putting myself forward to these opportunities will also allow me to improve on my skills.

How does last years experience reflect on the future?

The continuity assessments for the Great expectations novel was one of my key highlights throughout the year and something which I feel is very important for future reference, learning about continuity for television and film and why it is so important as well as creating the Miss Havisham character having to look almost identical to the first one created I felt gave me an insight in what the field was about.

The gothic horror industry was another thing which I felt could be used in the future, the topic  I felt allowed us to explore the industry a little more than the other topics it allowed us more freedom to put together an idea . the fact that we were also given a brief for two characters which had to link to one of the 12 chosen TV shows is a something which is used in careers in the makeup industry, a brief which describes the character or how the styling has to look.

Another thing which I feel from last years experience which can reflect n the future is the creation of periodic makeup , having to relate the makeup and hair styling to the correct era, is key and something which will be needed in future careers for TV and film.

Unfortunately throughout the year I didn't put myself forward for any job opportunities available in order to gain experience, however this was due to feeling not as confident during my first year due to have not much experience in the field , however now my confidence is growing this is something I will consider during my second year of university.

reflection on the summer

Three words which I feel sum up my summer is, motivation , development and opportunity . I have chosen the word motivation due to first of all after having my appraisal at work and becoming a senior sales being signed of 135 modules, I have become motivated to work up to team leader working through the modules to 600 credits, this something which I also consider as development.( I am now currently at 225 credits )

Over the summer I have also taken many opportunities the first one being : having to create a face paint for a Twickenham football game for a family member, the face paint was of darth maul from star wars and really helped me to develop my skills in terms of lines .

Another opportunity I took was friends and family night at work I was asked to created a makeup look for the daytime in order to sale some of Topshops products this allowed my to build my confidence du to having to create a look in front of an audience .

Travelling to Scotland via a 16 hour coach was another opportunity which I took, travelling long distance is something I haven't done often, but going to see a once in a life time festival ( T in the Park ) and experience camping which was something which is quite new to me can also be considered as an opportunity .

Finally being given a concession stand ( skinny dip London ) in Top shop to maintain is a big opportunity for me, It has allowed me to gain more experience in terms of stock take, giving feedback and also merchandising the stand .

An introduction to my study

Introducing me

My Photo

my name is Heidi, I became a student at Solent university in September 2014 taking the course BA HONs hair and makeup design. To me choosing university was a big decision, deciding  what university to choose and what course will suit me best. I therefore decided to take a gap year after college in order to find my feet.

before university i had chosen to go to a local college studying firstly business studies , travel and tourism music and dance which soon changed to graphics and history. I enjoyed these topics but in the back of my mind I had always had a love for more things that were practical rather than academic such as art and music. When i started working in retail at Topshop one of the biggest fashion retails and high street brands , i then started to take an interest into all things fashion , this was when i made the decision of going to university, however to take fashion styling . However throughout my gap year i decided to do some research on the course choices Solent had to offer and came across hair and makeup , after taking into consideration I decided me as a person would be best suited to the hair and makeup course and therefore started to apply for the course instantly, whilst applying for the course i found an old careers opportunity meeting review i had filled out, it reflected back on a career choice i had chosen nearly four years ago , which was hair and makeup design for theatre and film, this therefore confirmed my descision.

Throughout my reflective log I will be talking about my first year of university studying the hair and makeup course and will be mentioning my key high and low points throughout the year which I will take with me through my university journey

A fresh start

When starting university i was a little nervous due to lacking the skills in hair and makeup design, i had no previous experience in the field, although i knew i was going to university to learn the skills i was a little concerned about my ability on picking the skills up , with a slow start to my journey during first year I experienced many lows such as confidence with my designs during the Elizabethan topic  and also the ability to make my line work appear neat and tidy however towards the end of the year many of the things i felt were letting me down turnt into improvements learning from my own mistakes and taking on peoples feedback helped me to grow as an artist. After reflecting back on my designs at the beginning of the year and comparing them to designs which i created towards then end of the year also gave me self confidence and conveyed to me how i had improved.

A change in attitude

From the start of my first year at university to throughout the year i have noticed a change in attitude i have more self confidence and willingness to carry out tasks particularly at work, i also give feedback when needed and am more confident with talking to people. After carrying out timed assessments during my first year at university i also feel, my time management towards tasks in general are much more efficient . i feel the main things i have learnt during my first year at university are: Motivation; development and opportunity.

The improvements

After my first year at university there were a few things i can openly admit i need to improve such as keeping on top of the work load and not falling behind, although the workload can be quite daunting at times i need to remain motivated otherwise falling behind will lead to rushing the course and an increase in mistakes.

another thing i feel i need to improve on is driving my development always, always, always practice . the more i practice and develop my ideas the stronger they will become .

Not being afraid to ask for feedback or advice, by asking for advise this will allow me to gain help on my weakest areas in order to turn them into strengths, and opinions will allow me to know what  people really think about my work this will give me more self confidence or make me be able to recognise my faults or things which may need to be improved.

giving feedback , to a team allows you to have an opinion and share your ideas this is something which i feel i can improve on in order to build my confidence.

Strengths throughout the year

factors which i consider to be my strengths throughout the year, include: a thorough technical file, my technical file included a signficant amount of information about the techniques products and health and safety rules and regulations, this was something which i found very useful which i could revert back to throughout the year in order to improve my skills, the techniques i carried out several times in my own time, i added the photographs to my file so my lecturer was able to notice an improvement. My Miss Havisham design and also my Quentin design which both explored the use of special effects and relating a character to TV series and relating the character styling to the correct period of time.

key moments

I gathered together many of my designs which I felt were key moments and really showed my potential as a makeup artist:

The first two images were from the Elizabethan topic, me being the artist and having to recreate my partners designs .

The picture (left) conveys the final outcome of my design which I had developed from the Elizabethan topic, which my partner had to recreate during the time assessment. I felt this was a key moment throughout the year due to it being my first design for the year.

The picture (right) was during my first semester the task I had to carry out was the three brushes challenge , I felt this was a key moment for me as it conveyed when my line work and me work as an artist started to improve
The next two photographs are from the Victorian topic and having to recreate Miss Havisham from the great expectations novel by Charles Dickens. I felt the continuity assessment was a key moment for me as I started to improve my skills in terms of special effects and also improve on time management . the assessment also gave me an idea of the meaning of continuity why it  used in TV and film and why it is such an important aspect.

The photograph (left) was the death masks which had to be created as part of the Victorian topic I felt this was one of my key moments as it allowed me to work more with different styles of makeup and also focus  more on shadowing the face.

The photograph (right ) was the outcome of my informal Estella assessment, another character from the Victorian novel the great expectations. I felt his was another one of my key moments throughout the course as it allowed me to create a style of makeup relating to a certain period of time which appeared quite natural, I also felt during the assessment was en I started to become more confident with the hair side of the course.
The next two photographs convey my interpretation of horror, I decided to include these pieces as I felt proud of the outcome .The photograph (right) was a my time consuming piece .
The photograph (left) conveys my understanding of special effects ,which was my chosen option for my second year of the course. I kept practicing this technique in order for it to appear more realistic therefore I felt this was another key moment my year.

The photograph ( right) conveys my understanding of gathering an presenting visual information, it also convey my improvement of the use of photoshop and creating an electrical moodboard which was something I struggled with at the beginning of the year therefore I felt this was a key moment for me.

The photographs above also show examples of moodboards which I created for my gothic horror topic in order to convey my ideas.
here is the outcome of my final design for Mrs Laderman a character which was designed with a story line and had relate to a chosen TV series given, I felt this was a key moment for  as my first attempt I was unhappy with so I took feedback and advice from my lecturer on what I could do to improve my design. I also felt the character styling suited t character well and also complimented my use of our blending and line work.

The photograph (left) I felt was a key moment for me as I carried out a style of makeup for a brief which i was given, which was something new to me. I felt I interpreted the brief well .

The photograph(right) was another one of my favourite pieces of work throughout first year, I had to create a character which would relate to a chosen TV series , I felt the character styling related to the correct time period and also story line and the lighting also really complimented the makeup. The makeup I also felt conveyed how much I had improved as an artist throughout the year in terms of application, special effects and line work.

Thinking critically

what have I done well throughout the year?

Once I was able to find the motivation I found keeping on top of the work load in terms of my ideas and coursework was something I felt I done well throughout my first year of university .

From previous experiences from the last year I felt I was able to improve me skills through practice, this was something I identified when carrying out my technical file .

Another factor which I felt I did well was taking on others advise in order to improve my work till it was at its best, I carried this out in my first year of university by going to tutorials each week for lessons such as contextual studies and digital imagery.

What needs to change?

Since finishing my first year of university I have realised through working as a part time senior sales assistant at Topshop I really need to drive my development in order to get to where I want to be. For example if I have an idea or something which I belief I can make successful, develop and adapt the idea .

Another factor I feel needs to change is my lack of confidence , believing in myself in order to make something successful, for example if I have an idea which I feel could  work well I need to have the confidence to try the idea .

Feedback and advise is another thing I feel is an action I need to consider taking ,  taking advise or feedback from someone will help my ideas to develop . from previous experiences personal opinions are key.

In terms of my skills I feel there is always room for improvement, after reflecting back on my first year of university can see how much I have grown as a makeup artist and also what needs to be improved, such as my linework. making the application more precise in order to give the overall look a more professional finish.

In terms of responses and feedback something which needs to be taking into account next year is exploring the topic and conveying my own style of understanding the study, for example moodboards, sketches brainstorms and also referring to the key reading list, although reading may not be one of my strengths reflecting on the Victorian topic, the great expectations during my first year of university I felt reading the novel gave me a much better understanding.

Strengths throughout the year...

Some factors which I feel were my strengths throughout the year are:

my willingness to learn new things, I attended almost every lecture in order to gain the maximum amount of information needed I order to grow as a make up  artist. I also attended every one to one tutorial in order to use this as an opportunity to ask any questions needed or gain any advise.

my motivation, throughout the year although there is room for improvement I felt I was as motivated as I could be in order to keep up to date with any work given to me .

good use of free time: this was another factor which I felt was a strength throughout my first year of university, due to having minimal experience in the field and also being a commuter this meant I had a  lot of free time therefore I used this as an opportunity to catch up on my coursework load and also any skills I felt needing improving.

weaknesses throughout the year...

After taking into consideration the strengths I have gained throughout the year I also have to take into advise my weaknesses. Factors which I feel I need to work on are: my time management during an assessment although I manage to complete any timed assessment in due time I feel I am constantly rushing to finish as well as watching the clock this could be portrayed , as unprofessional , something which I could have perhaps done differently is plan ahead by planning ahead or practicing the design more times in order to become ore confident with managing the design .

Another factor which I feel I need to work on is adapting my understanding to the topic, although after taking on feedback from my first topic- the Elizabethans which was to develop ideas by creating moodboards and brainstorms I feel I could have adapted my understanding further in terms of podcasts films and perhaps key reading, this Is something to take on board during my second year of university,

Another factor which I definitely can identify as a weakness as it was something which I really struggled with was digital image, the use of the camera was something which I slightly improved on during my second semester but in terms of getting to grips with the editing side of the lesson was something I struggled with , perhaps watching tutorials would have been something I would have done differently .

influences

factors  which I have feel I would have done differently ad perhaps given a chance would have been perhaps look into the costume designing for my characters in order to complete the look especially for the character briefs such as Miss Havisham and my Elizabethan project this would have helped to compliment the hair and makeup . This will be something which I will consider giving a chance during my second year of university .

Many of the factors which influence my ideas for my designs came from internet research based on makeup from similar categories I felt this was a good Idea when having to create periodical hair an makeup however for the contemporary designs what I feel I could have done differently is perhaps use further research such as magazines and the vogue archive to become inspired by other designers work and develop my own style into them.

Most successful moment throughout the year I felt was towards the end of my first year , the Miss Havisham design, although everything was quite fast past it gave me an insight of what working in the industry would  really be like and I also was able to experiment with special effects for my design which gave me a clear idea on what option I wanted to take for my second year of university.

Another successful moment from my first year I felt was creating my Quentin character I was given a lot of spare time to create my idea and was also given the freedom to work outside of the studios on location with other people using the skills I knew and thought would work well.

the highs and the lows

The Highs and The lows of BA HONS hair and makeup level 4

Last year was my first year at Solent university taking the BA HONS hair and makeup course. I had no previous experience in the field, therefore I was a little worried the outcome of my designs were not going to be a good enough standard. Although I may have experienced many highs and lows throughout the course reflecting back on the journey through my first year of university watches me grow in terms of confidence developing my ideas and focusing on time management when carrying out an assessment .

      The highs of the study

          The Elizabethans

With no previous experience in the hair and makeup field, my confidence was pretty low and my journey was a pretty slow start.  The first topic we were introduced to were the Elizabethans , setting up a blog and gathering information I was pretty confident with but when it came to the practical and leading up to the assessment I began to feel slightly out of my comfort zone, after gathering my designs I started to feel slightly confident  with how to carry out the hair and the makeup  and manage my time for the assessment, however the real challenge was being paired up and carrying out my partners design which I only had a minimal amount of lessons to practice. In my own time I practiced my partners hair and makeup design using resources such as face charts my dolls head an the studios The outcome of the assessment I was surprisingly really happy with especially the hair due to having to add some last minute changes in on the day, although the padding was slightly visible and the beading which was a last minute amendment looked a little messy. The makeup I also was quite proud for a first attempt.

The photographs n the left hand side convey my makeup in the role of t designer, the hair in the role of the style and my partners makeup in the role of the artist, these pieces of work are which I felt were the highs in my journey throughout the year.

Miss Havisham

After we completed the Elizabethan the next topic was the introduction to the Victorians, which included creating death masks which allowed use to really explore the different ways on how to shade a face using different makeup products.

The topic however which I must say  enjoyed most was the great expectations introduction and creating the Miss Havisham character, this time I really wanted to incorporate special effects into my design which I felt was something which I would enjoy, I brainstormed may ideas for the characters makeup and came to final decision of was melting down the face in order to create a metaphorical version of the character. In terms of the hair I felt we didn't have as many lessons on the design aspect of things and started to become slightly worried with what I was going to do for my final design, I however realised I had become slightly more confident with the course and even asked for help and feedback on things which I was not too sure of. The Miss Havisham character was a continuity exam meaning the exam had to be carried out twice and the design both times had to look exactly the same, this was a real eyeopener for what working in the TV and film category would be like.

After completing the continuity exam the first time that was when I really started to see my confidence grow and also my improvement on time management, I was also really impressed on the outcome of my Miss Havisham hair and makeup design. I felt the second part of my continuity exam wasn't as high standard as my first attempt with some differences but was a good first try .

Estella

Creating Estella was an informal assessment, the character which we had to create was also from the great expectations book by Charles Dickens. Before carrying out the assessment I had a chance to practice the hair and the makeup. By practicing the makeup in my own time using face charts I felt more confident and therefore used lesson time to practice the hair and ask for any feedback which I felt would improve the design overall. I felt throughout the assessment I managed my time well , I carried out the hair which was more time consuming and then the makeup, I also added final touches such as props to make the design appear more complete. I felt the makeup was complimented really well on camera.

Gothic horror Quentin

Our next topic I really enjoyed, I felt I allowed us to explore the makeup styling in more depth and also allowed us more freedom when gathering ideas for our final design. The introduction to the gothic horror topic firstly appeared quite daunting especially with the lack of time we had. After deciding what two characters we had chosen to create looks for aswell as our chosen TV series we then had to present our ideas to a group of people and our lecturer, I was really nervous as speaking in front of people is out of my comfort zone, however present my ideas which I was really proud of.

Quentin was the first character I decided to recreate, In my own time I researched into special effects gathering ideas for my final design, I was really proud of the outcome of my final design for my Quentin character due to relating the character styling to the correct time period . My Quentin design was when I could finally start to see an improvement on work from the beginning of the year .

Gothic horror Mrs Laderman

For my Mrs Laderman character I had a vague idea on the design I was going to used. I shot the first design in the studio but was unhappy with the outcome this negative outcome was however turnt into a positive and taught me to not leave work which I felt could be improved and really shows of my skills. I therefore returned to the studios to redo my design and make a few amendments.

Contextual studies

contextual studies allowed me to write an article relate to several chosen topics with a word count of 2000, I had a clear idea on what I was going to write about . My chosen topic was going to be how David Bowie inspired women of the 20th century . Writing articles is not one of my strengths , gathering books and using resources such as the vogue archive, galleries and websites allowed me to become more confident with what I was going to write about in order to convey to the reader the point I was trying to get across. I also attended many tutorials in order to get the feedback I needed in order to improve my essay.

Digital image

digital image allowed me to take my own photography and edit images which could be used for advertisements for example . I found I started to become more confident with using a canon camera after my first digital image topic and could see an improvement on my photography, I was really happy with the outcome of my location shoot, which I used for the perfume added. The photograph which we shot as a group I felt it allowed me to give feedback to my group which was something I wasn't confident with before. When editing the images I also become more confident with asking for help and advice when needed. I attended tutorials with digital image lecturer Emma to gain feedback on what would make a good image.

Technical file

the technical file which we had to create allowed our lecturers to see our understanding on the skills which they had taught us. This is something which  I found I was good at providing a significant amount of information on the health and safety rules and regulations the techniques and equipment needed to carry out a skill and pictures of the outcome of the makeup/ hair .

The lows of the study

During the start of the course I experienced many lows , this was due to not having much experience or confidence within the field. One of the first tasks which I noticed my work was not as up to scratch was creating Halloween makeup , we had a selected mount of time to replicate a skeleton face paint , the time got the better of me causing the final outcome to appear rushed, my line work was also majorly lacing . I noticed when carrying out some styles of makeup being left handed would cause me difficulties causing makeup which I would apply to the left side of the face would be smudged, I then realised I had to work back front starting from the right side of the face and working across the face in order to prevent this from happening.

The Elizabethans

The Elizabethans was the first topic which we had to great a design for , I found learning about the Elizabethans and gathering the information for my blog really interesting, I also felt carrying out face charts allowed me to improve on my skills, however the practical side of the course I felt I was less confident with . In terms of the hair side of the course particularly adding padding to the hair was one of my weaknesses . I also felt my design for my timed assessment was rather weak. Something which I had learnt from the Elizabethan topic was to develop my ideas further in terms of the makeup and always keep up to date with the workload set.

The great expectations and the Victorians

the next topic we were introduced to was the Victorians this I found very interesting I also expanded my resources using brainstorms books and websites , reading the great expectations book I found a little bit of a struggle due to the novel being quite a lengthy book and the lack of time I had to read it, however the positive outcome was I managed to get a clearer understanding of the story through the book and was able to compare it to the motion picture which was valuble information for my blog. The only thing I feel which could be considered as one of the lows in this part of the study was lack of time, in terms of learning Victorian hairstyles, however practicing in my own time and asking for help allowed me to turn this negative into a positive. My Miss Havisham character I was a little worried about due to it being a continuity assessment and my design being quite a difficult one to replicate however I was impressed with the outcome of the assessment, I was also a little worried about how to carry out the melted face design I used a variety of different materials until I was happy with one which I felt captured the look best.

Gothic horror

The final topic for my first year of the makeup and hair course was exploring gothic horror, I was a little worried as the topic was quite an in depth one, I was paranoid about missing any significant information from blog. The workload compared to the lack of time we had I also found a little daunting. My first character which I created was Quentin the human puppet, the design was shot on location in a cabin under yellow lighting, I was very happy with the character styling, however I noticed when shooting the look under a white light on he camera some flaws started to appear, for example the cuts on the hands appeared a little discoloured to in comparison to my models skin tone, I did edit this on photoshop and noted the problem which occurred on my blog.

The next character which I created was Mrs Laderman I was really disappointed with the outcome of my first design, in terms of the makeup and the character styling, the costume did not relate to my chosen TV series and the makeup appeared messy in terms of the linework, this look I therefore decided t reshoot in the studio another time.

Digital image

the lowest point of my study I felt was the digital image aspect of the course, I firstly really struggled with using a camera which I did improve on during my next topic and then I began to struggle with the use of photoshop and the use of illustrator to create a logo. Applying the products to my final design without them not looking as if they were copied and pasted was one of my weakest points and also creating a logo after spending 6 hours creating a logo using illustrator I was told by another lecturer a different method on how to create a logo , I found this really confusing and distressing , however I managed to complete my work before the deadline which was overwhelming.

contextual studies

writing an essay for contextual studies was slightly out of my comfort zone, something which was a major weakness was building up my word count with too much detail rather than with relevant information, I felt I managed my time well but really struggle with the word count on my essay .

After assessing the highs and the lows throughout my journey I can see what skills I  have improved on throughout the year and what skills I will also need to focus on next year in order to become more confident.
